Every October, OCD Awareness Week offers an opportunity to bring understanding, compassion, and hope to those living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD continues to be misunderstood by many—and those who experience it often feel isolated, ashamed, or uncertain about how to move forward.
At Modern Anxiety Solutions, LLC we specialize in evidence-based treatment for OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference Based CBT (I-CBT) to help people reclaim their lives from anxiety’s grip.
Understanding OCD: It’s Not Just About Cleanliness or Order
OCD is often portrayed as a quirky preference for neatness or a love of routines. In reality, it’s a deeply distressing cycle of intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and the repetitive mental or behavioral rituals (compulsions) used to relieve the anxiety they create. These compulsions may offer temporary relief, but over time they reinforce the brain’s false alarms—keeping the cycle alive.
You don’t have to have “visible” compulsions to struggle with OCD. Many people experience primarily mental rituals like rumination, reassurance-seeking, or mental reviewing.
The Path Forward: ERP
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered the gold standard for non pharmacological OCD treatment. ERP helps you gradually face the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger anxiety—without engaging in the usual compulsive response. Over time, your brain learns that you can tolerate uncertainty and distress, and that anxiety doesn’t need to control your choices.
We also offer Inference Based CBT (I-CBT) which is a purely cognitive based treatment. The goal of I-CBT is to help people stop engaging with the doubt process that OCD creates and to learn to trust themselves again. At Modern Anxiety Solutions we incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into our OCD treatment. While ERP focuses on changing behavior, I-CBT focuses on the doubting process and to dispel OCD’s tricks, ACT helps change the relationship with your thoughts and emotions. Instead of fighting to “get rid of” anxiety, ACT teaches you to make room for it—to notice it, allow it, and still move toward what truly matters to you.
When combined, ACT and ERP or I-CBT help people stop battling their minds and start living more freely, more fully, and with greater self-compassion.
From Fear to Freedom
It’s completely normal to feel scared about starting treatment. Many people with OCD worry that exposures will be overwhelming, but the truth is that ERP is always collaborative, structured, and paced to match your readiness. You’re never asked to do anything you’re not prepared for, and each step forward builds confidence and resilience.
Change is possible and you can learn to relate differently to your mind—to stop trying to control every thought and instead focus on building a meaningful, values-driven life.
OCD Awareness Week is a reminder that you don’t have to face OCD alone. At Modern Anxiety Solutions, we help clients learn evidence-based skills to break free from the OCD cycle through ERP, I-CBT and ACT.
